Daily attendance data from four Texas districts found that when classmates were absent, students became more likely to be absent the following day, with effects continuing for several days. The finding reinforces that attendance is social, not only individual. If absence patterns can spread through peer environments, schools have reason to build positive attendance norms where students see, discuss, and reinforce showing up with one another.
